Periodizing for Powerlifting: How and Why

You can’t lift max all year round. Periodization helps you peak at the right time – whether you’re competing in a meet or training for strength.

What is periodization? A systematic way of training in which you vary in:

  • Volume (sets x reps)

  • Intensity (weight)

  • Frequency (how often you do a lift)

Examples:

  • Linear: weight increases, reps decrease per week

  • Undulating: intensity and volume vary per session

  • Block: phases of hypertrophy → strength → peak

Why?

  • Prevents plateaus

  • Reduces overtraining

  • Maximizes long term strength gains
